Estelle Lordonne has entered Suicide Blonde’s new set of collections, not unlike an unfamiliar forest filled with traps, illusions and perils, and consequently all the more fascinating. Far from being oblivious, indeed quite the contrary, the creative director was well aware of these perils from past experience.
Where past collections might have been a mere style exercise, they nevertheless paved the way for Suicide Blonde’s new aesthetic direction. The leather appliqués of old are still present in the bespoke side of the Label, but have now given way to the digitally printed leather from which the new made to order collections are composed. The leathers have, as always, been selected with special care, featuring a most favoured range of textured and washed lamb and calf skins. Attention has particularly been given to the design and fabrication of the zip pullers. Mostly design inspired from Victorian antiques and Bric-à-Brac findings, these zip pullers have then been cast by a “Queen’s Appointed” silversmith in London. Made of 925 Hallmarked silver, they have in turn been oxidised in Suicide Blonde’s workshop.
Two years in the making, these new collections have demanded absolute faith and constant creative illumination, only made possible by absolute rigour and solemn dedication.
A constant and ever evolving quest for sourcing sustainable and carbon neutral materials is the work in progress of Suicide Blonde. This ethos has secured the Label a place, alongside emerging and prominent companies, at the Centre for Sustainable Fashion at London College of Fashion.
The Suicide Blonde studio is based in Hackney, the East End of London, where all accessories are designed, prepared and cut. Over the years, Estelle Lordonne has developed a close relationship with a family-owned, local workshop that still favours artisan methods for the final assembly of the pieces.
The hand fabrication process gives Suicide Blonde accessories a unique “Plastique” favoured by discerning individuals on the look-out for durable and timeless products.
With digital printing of leather, Estelle Lordonne has ventured into avant-garde territory. This technique, largely unexplored at present with regard to leather accessories, represents the most sophisticated replacement to the antiquated screen-printing one. The quest to find a tannery with such innovative expertise has proven to be as elusive as the search for the Holy Grail. An Italian tannery has now fulfilled this search and is a great asset in bringing to life Suicide Blonde’s eccentric themes.
The themes developed in the new collections are transcribed by a peculiar, poetic and gothic imagery; their leitmotivs interfered by a certain underlying humour noir. Antithetic themes, oscillating between dream and nightmare, the sacred and the profane, suggest a surreal place where time and life are suspended.
We bid you welcome.
